How to Measure Narrow Hallways and Door Frames

Capture the dimensions that determine furniture clearance, not just the widest wall-to-wall distance.

A hallway measurement is useful only when it includes its pinch points, turns, and objects that cannot be removed.

  1. 1.Measure at three heights

Baseboards, rails, and light fixtures can make width or height different from the central measurement.

  2. 2.Find the tightest point

Record the smallest width, the shortest ceiling clearance, and every fixed obstruction.

  3. 3.Map turns and doors

Measure each corridor segment and the clear area around corners, including door swing paths.

  4. 4.Use one consistent unit

Keep all entries in centimetres or inches; mixed units create avoidable planning errors.
